Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Industrial Heritage

Tomioka silk mill is a heritage in Gumma prefecture. China invented silk fabrics in ancient times and that industrial production started in Europe in 19th century. Tomioka silk mill is the first succeeded factory of silk thread mass production in worldwide. That silk exported to worldwide and silk fabrics popularize. By this reason, Tomioka silk mill became one of UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.The Tomioka Silk Mill became a World Heritage Site because it was the first in the world (19th century) to have a group of women who received a salary of more than 200 people.
